My Grandmother, Edith Shoemaker, had moved to Sedona with her dog, Snoopy where she was among the very first to settle in what is now Village of Oak Creek.
One winter morning we went to a small café in uptown for a warming breakfast of eggs, toast and hash browns. To this day I can still recall the joyful taste of the homemade blackberry jam made from fresh berries picked along the banks of Oak Creek Canyon! It was there on Main Street that she pointed out a sandstone rock formation just across the way to the east that she said was "Snoopy Rock".
The beloved beagle character, Snoopy made famous in the 1950s by cartoonist, Charles Schultz, was suddenly visible in spite of a light dusting of snow. My sister and brothers and I tried to wrap our heads around the idea that the rocks had inspired the man.
In an approach I often like to take for my art, "A Different Point of View" considers sights from the area near the Snoopy Rock formation, facing north near Hillside Galleries. If you're visiting Sedona, you can see the profile of the Snoopy Rock formation by facing east on AZ Hwy 179 between the Schnebly Hill Rd. turnoff and the highway 89 junction.
